Republic and hearts of Ireland midfielder Glenn Whelan admits before going to Hearts to increase his odds of playing Euro 2020, he had offers from clubs overseas.
After deliberating about a movement overseas before joining Hearts on a one-year-contract in August Aston Villa following their promotion into the Premier League in the summer released whelan.
The 35-year-old admitted that he consulted with Ireland manager Mick McCarthy before deciding which team to join in a bid to extend his international career.
Whelan said:I talked to the manager. I had one or two options overseas that were interesting at the time.
The director wasnt overly excited to be fair because the league wasnt probably as strong as where Im playing now or where I had been in. He needs me trying to play competitively as much and high as I can.
If it was down to cash Id be gone in sunlight somewhere at the minute. However, for me its never been about cash or earning a specific wage.
Im happy playing soccer and thats all that I want to do, so for me it was all about getting the club right for your family and to have a chance playing Ireland.
Should Ireland qualify for the European Championships their collection fixtures will probably be staged in the Aviva Stadium of Dublin and also Whelan insists when picking Hearts this was a big factor for him.
He said:I need to play for Ireland at the Euros, therefore I spoke to a few people and I think in the end, Hearts was the perfect decision for me.
When I talked to the Hearts boss , I told him basically I need to play so long as I can as high as I am because I would like to get a terrific likelihood of qualifying and I would really like to still be around and become a part of this.
I think that itll suit me. The director at Hearts has been really great to me, he has given me some time off to go and see the family and move and spend some time down there so its been OK.
Top of Circle currently sit with 11 points in their five matches, however, they face tough competition from Switzerland and Denmark for the two automatic Euro 2020 qualification places.
Whelan added:Were still miles off [qualifying]. Weve got three games. We know that may be removed from us although obviously the position that were in is an excellent place.
It is an important sport off to Georgia. Get the ideal outcome there and that will give us confidence going into the other , but youve got to take every game as it comes.
Three days after ireland will travel to Tblisi to perform with Georgia on Saturday before a crucial away fixture with Switzerland, both matches live on Sky Sports.
